By the time most horror story boyfriends are done patronizingly telling their girlfriends to stop worrying so much because it was probably nothing, Shuichi has finished locating the nearest supply of gasoline, matches, and holy water.Īnd now, we return to this story of mayhem and Spiral with….ĭeep breaths, Souichi. She’s escaped narrowly time and time again, with the help of her boyfriend, Shuichi, who is probably the best romantic interest to exist in any horror comic ever. She feels like someone you could know, or someone you could imagine *being*. But she’s far and away from a wilting, helpless victim, too. She’s not a wise cracking gun toting instant action hero. She’s likable, heroic, but has a lot of limits in her abilities and influence. She is, to Souichi, probably one of the best examples of ALL TIME of a ‘normal every day’ hero in a horror story. No matter the threat, Kirie is unfailingly heroic, wasting no time to try and rescue the people close to her from the threats around them, even if it means charging into danger. Kirie! She’s a very kind, practical, and steadfast girl who has had to watch as her town warps under the influence of the Spiral Curse, from the peoples minds, to their bodies, to landmarks, to her own hair. Uzumaki! One of the only horror stories so effective, so gripping, so *horrifying* that Souichi is fairly sure no one even REMEMBERS that it’s inherent story concept is completely ridiculous! But in a more specific, non-meta way, Uzumaki is the story of a very small, isolated town, and a girl who is first person witness to just about everything going to complete hell.
